Cyber Ninja Weapons

Time Duration:

  • Cyber Shuriken: 04/10/2023 - 13/10/2023

  • Cyber Ninjatō: 04/10/2023 - 31/10/2023

This shows the two different processes of where I created different Cyberpunk style ninja weapons to go with the main character’s arsenal.

Research

I choose to find ninja-based weapons as well as some cyber tech versions to stick with how theme is a Japanese cyberpunk stealth heist.

Shuriken Specifications

These are the size specifications to the Shuriken I’ve collected.

  • Diameter: 18 cm

  • Thickness 3.6 cm

Ninjatō Sword Specifications

I was able to find out the measurements and the materials of the Ninjatō sword.

  • Overall Length: 97 cm

  • Blade Material: Steel & Red Plasma

  • Blade Length: 70 cm

  • Blade Width: 2.5 cm

  • Blade Thickness: 0.5 cm

  • Habaki Size: 3 cm

  • Habaki Material: Red Plasma

  • Guard (Tsuba) Thickness: 0.5 cm

  • Guard Height: 5 cm

  • Guard Width 3.75 cm

  • Guard Material: Steel

  • Handle (Tsuka): 25 cm

  • Handle Thickness: 2.5 cm

  • Handel Material: Leather & Red Neon

  • Pommel (Kashira or end cap) size: 1.5 cm

  • Pommel Material: Red Neon

Sketches

Sketches of Ninja Throwing Weapons

These are some sketches of throwing weapons; two sketches are shuriken’s (ninja stars) whereas the other three sketches are kunai’s (ninja knifes).

Sketches of Ninja Swords

Whereas the other set of sketches shows ninja swords: the first design is basically a Katana, whereas the others are mainly Ninjatōs with different styles like the third design is part a machete.

Modelling Process

Cyber Shuriken

1) I started by descaling four edges of a primitive pipe model by 50% to make the model more of shuriken shaped.

2) Next, I deleted some to the lines and pivots points in the centre of the model and used the multi-cut tool to connect some of pivot points.

3) Before exporting the model, I repositioned the UV map after altering the position of some of the pivots.

Cyber Ninjatō

1) I started by using the multi-cut tool on the box model and used the target weld to create the blade.

2) Creating the models for the Handle and Pommel wasn’t difficult to do, I just had to add the sizes and delete some faces.

3) I then duplicated the blade model and altered its shape to create the habaki of the sword. For the Ninjatō’s guard I had to add a bevel to some of the edges a box model.

4) Next, I merged all five of the models into one and used the target weld to connect any loose pivot points, and I’ve added some extract lines on the handle part of the model.

5) Finally, I reedited the UV map before exporting the model.

Creating Material Maps

Cyber Shuriken

I simply just created the 3 different maps based on the weapon wasn’t hard to do it was just using the shape tool to the shape of the layer, changing the colours of some of the shapes and merge the different layers. The emission map (located on the right) is just a duplicated version of the albedo map (located on the left).

Cyber Ninjatō

I used Adobe Substance 3D Painter to create the material maps for the Ninjatō. Creating the Neon Material was a bit hard, so I had to the go to Adobe Substance 3D Community Assets to import a material called "neon blue". I added a Black mask layer to the selected materials and used the Polygon Fill tool to select the specific faces of the model.

Even if Substance 3D Painter had an error with exporting the emission map, so I had to use Photoshop to create it by using the shape tool.

Final Models

These are my finished versions of the cyber ninja weapons that are on my ArtStation account.

Reflection on Asset Process

The improvements I would have done with making the ninjatō:

  •  Not to take long with the design process.

  •  Changing the shape of the Guard, Handle, and Pommel of the model.

  •  Creating better materials for the model.

The improvements I would have done with making the shuriken:

  • Reshaped the UV map.

  • Creating more/better material maps for the model.

  • Reshaping the model to be more complex.
